Description

Collection of portrait and landscape paintings, drawings, and sketches on paper, mostly in watercolour, ink, and pencil, from the period 1836 to 1868 and undated.

The collection comprises portraits of individuals and groups, including subjects sketched in New Zealand during the years 1847-1851. Landscapes include New Zealand scenes and others mostly from Great Britain and Europe, including the Ottoman Empire and Madeira. New Zealand works relate to Kororareka, Whangarei, Whangaroa, Whangaruru, Waikanae, Otago, and the Hutt Valley. Other identified localities include England, Scotland, Wales, Turkey, Italy, and the Pyranees.

Also includes animal portraits, studies, unfinished sketches, a bound sketch pad, and an etching.

The group of lots pertaining to Richard Aldworth Oliver was given the overall title: 'Richard Aldworth Oliver at home and abroad, 1830s-1860s: a collection of sketches and artefacts from the artist's family (lots 4-7)'.

Original auction catalogue description: "Sketches in New Zealand 20 watercolours and drawings of Maori and New Zealand scenery, one titled '"Otago" Native Houses near the heads’, one inscribed and dated ‘Hutt NZ / Octr 3 48’, one portrait titled ‘E’Toa’, one river landscape indistinctly inscribed ‘Wangan..’ [...] with a large collection of unframed watercolours and drawings of British and Continental scenery including subjects taken in Turkey (1830s), Italy (1843), the Pyranees and Madeira." Description: Pencil sketch of a landscape with a large gathering of people, some standing, some seated, and others looking on from elevated ground, including horses. Pencil sketch on verso depicts full length figure study portraying female subject wearing a headscarf and long dress. Preliminary sketch for ATL C-054-018, which was later developed for a lithographic plate in Oliver's 'A series of lithographic drawings from sketches in New Zealand' (London: Dickinson, 1852). The letterpress accompanying the published lithograph states: "A Korero. Eloquence is as much valued by these people as by more educated races. Upon this occasion the Governor-in-chief (Sir George Grey) was addressed by Te Rangihaeta, who if not eloquent was highly energetic; his forte lay more in the field than the council, while Te Ranperaha was famous for his oratory.
