Description

Comprises negatives of New Zealand civil aircraft originally in three index card drawers, possibly created from the 1940s to the 1950s, by unknown photographers.

The images are mainly of the ZK-A-- registration aircraft, from ZK-AAA to ZK-AZS, although there are a few images of ZK-B-- and ZK-G-- registrations, as well as some images of parachutists, airfields, and general views at air shows. Most images are identified by the registration identifier of the plane. The first image in the sequence does not have a registration identifier, and is entitled 'Walsh Bros Flying Boat'. Some aircraft are unidentified, as their registration markings are not visible in the photographs.

The images of aircraft show them in the air, on the ground, and in hangars. Many appear to have been taken at airshows, mainly in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and the images of the aircraft on the ground often show them surrounded by people.

Some negatives have marginal notes that identify when and where they were taken, or note a fault in the negative.

Series includes examples of the original negative enclosures.

Arrangement: The negatives were arranged alphabetically by the middle letter of the aircraft registration suffix (e.g. ZK-AAA, ZK-ABA, etc) and separated by alphabetical dividers in three card index drawers. A card labelled "New Zealand Civil Aircraft" was at the front of the sequence of negatives. A divider with a blank tab followed the 'XYZ' divider, and the contents behind that divider were a mixture of images of aircraft with ZK-B-- and ZK-G-- registrations, groups of aircraft, general views of airshows, and some unlabelled images.

Physical Description: Black and white original negatives, approximately 7 x 11.5 cm, although size varies.

Processing information: Negatives have been rehoused into acid-free envelopes from the original glassine bags in which they were stored. Most have been stored in 1/4 plate negative envelopes, but some, which were slightly larger, have been stored in 1/2 plate negative envelopes. The negatives have been listed in the order in which they were found in the drawers.
