The collection consists of a wide variety of records including; correspondence of Federation of Labour secretaries and presidents with Government Departments, individual unions and overseas labour organisations; National and Executive minutes; subject files on campaigns the Federation was involved in, disputes, submissions, agreements, wage bargaining, and arbitration; conference papers; general administration files; research reports; files on related oganisations; publications and ephemera; and records of the Trades and Labour Councils Federation, a predecessor of the Federation of Labour. Papers on the formation of the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions. (For more detail refer to the inventory and preliminary listings).

Accession 95-050: Records relate to the final period of the FOL as an organisation, and include National Executive minutes, agendas, correspondence, conference reports; economic and industrial relations matters, employment and training, social issues, science and technology and vocational training. Also records dealing with other bodies such as trade councils, Vocational Training Council and international organisations such as ILO

The New Zealand Federation of Labour was formed in 1937 by the Industrial Unity Conference. It was the major federation of private sector workers in New Zealand until its amalgamation with the combined state unions in 1988 to form the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions.
