- Description
8 sketches in pencil or ink for coats of arms for New Zealand and for the Department of Internal Affairs. One sheet refers to 'G. Wood's [sic] design', another has the address of G. Laurenson, Palmerston North on the back
Until 1911, New Zealand used the British coat of arms. The New Zealand coat of arms was adopted in 1911 and standardised in 1956. There were competitions in 1906 and 1908 to design a coat of arms (some competition design entries are held at Archives New Zealand), most of the 1906 ones being destroyed by the 1907 Parliament Buildings fire. The 1908 winner was James McDonald. By the 1940s there were at least 20 variant designs in use - these were standardised in 1956.
