Description

Five photograph albums and some loose prints relating to the service of Lyna Todd Newell (later Dibble) as a nurse in Egypt and England during World War One, taken between circa 1915 and circa 1917. Most photographs probably taken by Nurse Newell. Includes captions, but most are too faint to read.

Albums contain images taken at Balmer Lawn Section, No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England in circa 1917, and show building exteriors, grounds, patients and nurses. Also includes interior views of hospital wards and mess. Some images feature Sister Dibble.

One album shows photographs taken in Egypt circa 1915-1916, including three pictures taken at the wedding of Nurse Mildred Jane Ellis and Lieutenant Alexander Edward Wrottesley Salt at Cairo, 21 May 1916. Also includes a series of images showing trenches at Gallipoli which were probably not taken by Newell.

Lyna Todd Newell (serial number 22/153), known as Toddy, was Dr Johnson's great aunt. She qualified as a nurse in 1911 and left New Zealand for her overseas service with the New Zealand Army Nursing Service in 1915. Newell was stationed in Egypt and England before returning to New Zealand on the 'Remuera' in 1919, and after being discharged from military service on 1 July 1919, she married Frank Gordon 'Tiny' Dibble in 1920. She died in Auckland on 2 January 1975 (See military service record at Archives New Zealand).

Includes captions, but most are too faint to read. - Features three pictures under the heading "1st Wedding in the NZ ANS [New Zealand Army Nursing Service] - Cairo", taken at the wedding of Nurse Mildred Jane Ellis and Lieutenant Alexander Edward Wrottesley Salt at Cairo, 21 May 1916. - Includes photographs taken in Egypt circa 1915-1916 showing gate of New Zealand General Hospital in Cairo, military personnel posing with camels at the pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza, temple ruins and pillars at Luxor, group portrait of Egyptian women, and hospital train in Alexandria. Other images show the sultan's palace, the sultan's guard, a swing bridge over a canal in Barrage Gardens, the river Nile, and the citadel of Cairo. - Images from England feature Bournemouth Beach, Bournemouth Gardens, also the Rufus Stone and Compton Arms Hotel, in New Forest. Photographs taken at Balmer Lawn Section, No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, Hampshire, England in circa 1917, show interior views showing hospital wards, building exteriors, grounds, patients and nurses. - Scotland is featured in images taken at Edinburgh, Ellen's Isle in Loch Katrine, and at Loch Lomond. - From New Zealand there are photographs of a parade of Reinforcements at Trentham. - Australian scenes include troops marching past Dog Rock in Albany, Western Australia. - Also includes image of a Canadian Women's Motor Ambulance and the Cunard Line ship RMS 'Aquitania'. - A series of images of Gallipoli probably not taken by Newell. Description: Album of photographs relating to the service of Lyna Todd Newell (later Dibble) as a nurse in Egypt and England during World War One, taken between circa 1915 and 1917. Newell, who features as a subject on some of the photographs, probably took many of the images in this collection. Includes captions, but most are too faint to read. Album contains images showing street scenes in London, including double-decker buses, penguins in a zoo, prominent buildings, bridges, monuments, and "The Old Curiosity Shop immortalized by Charles Dickens". Commercial photographic prints include "The Old Tree, Brockenhurst" by Davis, and "Balmer Lawn In Winter", "The Grand Hotel, Lyndhurst", "The Medical Hockey Team", "The Hall Balmer Lawn Xmas 1917", "The Avenue Bramshaw Wood" by Davis, "The Dining Hall", and "No 3 Ward". Photographs probably taken from a coastal vantage point show naval vessels at sea, while indoor scenes taken at the military hospital feature Christmas festivities with decorations including "Kia Ora NZ" over fireplace, and "God Save the King" over the staircase at Balmer Lawn. Includes some postcards from Cairo and other real photo postcards mounted in album. Cairo images show mosque door, the mosque el Ghoree, the fair, Moolid al Ahmadee, and the citadel of Cairo. Description: Collection of sixteen loose photographic prints, one portrait clipped from an illustrated newspaper and one greeting card originally laid in photograph albums from the same collection, mostly from the period of World War One, by unknown photographers, dated circa 1914 to 1956. Includes the following items: - Group portrait including Lyna Todd Newell from the time when she worked as a nurse in Egypt and England during World War, 1914-1918, showing her together with a group of military officers and two other nurses, by an unidentified photographer. - Portrait of Newell together with her husband 'Tiny' Dibble, taken sometime between the time of her marriage in 1920 and her husband's death in 1956, by 'The Studio de Luxe' in Kaikohe. Colection of eight images originally found with album PA1-o-1913, including: - Group portrait "Staff Balmer Lawn Sect[ion] No 1 NZ G[eneral] H[ospital]" - Building portrait in winter with snow, captioned "Snow in England where the Village people told us on arrival here it never snows here". - Group portrait of Newell and others, inscribed "[Newell] I am the lady with the white cap.
