Transparencies relating to the production of the 1994 New Zealand film 'Once were warriors' taken by Kerry Brown with the assistance from Ann Shelton. Individual frames do not include information about which of the two photographers took them.
Numerous images relate to the scene in which Beth (Rena Owen) and Nig (Julian Arahanga) confront Jake (Temuera Morrison) and Bully (Cliff Curtis) about Bully raping Grace. A series of images focusses on the fight sequence between Jake and Bully. Director Lee Tamahori is photographed individually, with cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh, and rehearsing the scene with key actors as well as posing with bar extras.
Portraits of key cast members in character include Beth, Nig, Jake, Bully, and Dooley (Pete Smith). Group portraits show the Heke family at home. Beth and Grace (Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell), Nig and Beth, Bully and Nig, and Jake and Dooley are photographed together. Other series show Rena Owen having her make up done, Temuera Morrison in an office with his script during pre-production, and Toa gang members. Also holds a small series of Nig's initiation for the Toa gang.
Arrangement: The transparency strips were originally held in folded sleeves that were inserted in A4 plastic ringbinder sleeves numbered one through to 13. In some cases, 35mm strips or individual frames were layered over each other in an individual portion of the negative sleeve. Due to conservation and access concerns, these strips were individually rehoused in archival quality ring binder sleeves. The original enclosures are interleaved in front of the sheet of strips they formerly held.
