Description

Collection contains over 500 letters relating to the Halcombe family. Comprises mainly of letters to and from Arthur and Edith, but also their children and Arthur's cousin Elizabeth Harris in England. Correspondents include extended family members with notable figures including William and Sarah Fox and William Swainson. Also contains letters to and from Arthur Halcombe relating to his business matters and notes and correspondence relating to the murder of Robert Rayner in Rangitikei in June 1864 as well as financial records.

Arthur Halcombe and Edith Swainson married on 3 December 1863 and had eight children (at least five of whom survived until adulthood). Arthur Halcombe worked as a farmer, farm manager, immigration agent, newspaper editor, justice of the peace, and local councillor. Edith Halcombe worked as an artist, community leader, and farmer. For parts of their marriage they lived in Rangitikei, Fielding, Auckland, Lichfield, and Urenui.
