Description: A low open-sided dwelling with trees either side. To the right is a naked figure seen from behind, holding a stick across his shoulder, with fruit suspended from it. The drawing is a study for a detail in Ellis' A view in Vaitepiha Bay' Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.85. Other Titles - A Tahitian and a hut [Joppien / Smith's title]. A view in Vaitepiha Bay, Tahiti Inscriptions: Recto - top right - 'Otaheite?' in ink. In the National Library of Australia is the finished version of this drawing, an ink, wash and watercolour work, titled A view in Vaitepeha Bay [August 1777], ref. no. NK 6577. Description: Frontal view of a standing male figure in ceremonial mourning dress including headgear and mask, with a clapper in his right hand, a shark-toothed club in his left. Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.112. There is a similar but more finished drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 15513, f.18). Description: A view from the sea of a symmetrical volcanic peak, identified from the text of Ellis' Voyage, Vol. II, p. 281 'A sugarloaf hill bore S. E. by E. and a part of the land making in a kind of a cape N. E. This cape was denominated Shoal Ness by Captain Cook ...'. The volcano is now named Mount Shishaldin, located on Unimak Island in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska On the front of a sheet of paper, containing two views. Description: Frontal view of a young woman of Vaitepeha Bay, Tahiti, daped in a huge amount of tapa cloth from the ribs down, the cloth hung with two feathered breasptplates and both cloth and breastplates intended as presents Joppien / Smith number for this drawing is 3.108. This may be the earliest version of this drawing, for which 2 ink and wash versions by Webber exist (British Library Add Ms 15513, f.17 and Dixson Library, State Library of New South Wales, PXX 2,12) as well as an engraved version 'A young woman of Otaheite bringing a present' (Cook / King, 1784, Plate 27, Vol.II, p. 50-51) with loose copy held at C-131-1-027 Inscriptions: Recto - top right - 'Girl of Otaheite bringing presents' in ink.
