Description

Collection comprises papers, photographs and one object relating to potter Helen Mason (nee Valentine).

Photographs collected by Helen Mason relating to her work as a potter and also her husband Malcolm Mason's army service during World War Two. Chiefly by unidentified photographers and largely dated between 1939-1942 and 1990-2009. Also contains photographs of family and friends, original negatives and a stamped and addressed envelope that contained an original negative.

Papers include material relating to Mason's career as a potter and the development of the arts and crafts movement in New Zealand. Includes correspondence, scrapbooks, sketches, research notes, photographs, ephemera, newspaper cuttings, and periodicals highlighting Mason's practice as an artist. Also contains personal papers including inward and outward correspondence with husband Malcolm Mason during his time on active service and as a prisoner of war during World War Two; James K Baxter first edition printing from the Otago University Press of 'Jerusalem Sonnets', signed by Baxter with an accompanying letter and inserted unpublished holograph poem written by Baxter; and a Barry Brickell signed publication relating to the history and story of Driving Creek Railway.

Processing information: The photographs and manuscripts were brought together as a multi-format group in 2019. Prior to this it was separated into format-based parts. There are still some formats which remain in other Curatorial Sections. See Separated Material for details.

Part of the 2015 accrual, and a further 2018 accrual is yet to be processed (as of October 2019).

Audiovisual material which had previously been separated out to Oral History and Sound was added back in to this collection in April 2022.
