Extensive research notes, including correspondence and photocopies of documents; index cards, lecture notes and other papers relating to Dame Judith Binney's long career as a historian. Of particular significance are papers relating to her highly-praised work on Thomas Kendall, Rua Kenana, Te Kooti Rikirangi Turuki, and the history of the Urewera region and Tūhoe iwi. The collection also contains her electronic correspondence, including 15 email mailboxes from her personal email address.
Photographic materials include prints, negatives, and transparencies, collected and taken by Binney.
Collection contains a significant number of sound recordings of oral history interviews, mainly with Tūhoe elders. Also includes transcripts and notes for some interviews, and other video and sound recordings of interest to Binney for her research and teaching.

The Library also holds digitised copies of oral history interviews described in Series 15 of the collection. The digitised copies were created by the University of Auckland Archive of Māori and Pacific Music. These are described at ATL-Group-00215.
Prominent New Zealand historian, particularly noted for her well-regarded works on Māori responses to colonisation. Her works include biographies of the early missionary, Thomas Kendall, the Tūhoe leader, Rua Kenana, and the Māori leader and founder of the Ringatu Church, Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki.
