Description

Watercolours and photographs of New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Samoa, Tonga and other countries including Indonesia. Includes landscapes, sketches of native peoples and Pacific Island life, New Zealand plants, sketches of birds

New Zealand photographs are mostly of Maori artifacts from Augustus Hamilton's collection, Napier and are likely to be the work of William Williams. Photographs also of Pacific Islands and of Australia

A family member suggests that the album is most likely to be the work of Isabella Lister, the oldest family member and known to have artistic talent (there are other sketchbooks by her still in family hands); Dr Joseph Lister, the second child in the family, and possibly their younger sister, Gulielma, whose writing is recognisable in the album. Two sketches are signed J. J. L. However the strong similarity of style and the subject-matter of some sketches suggest that almost all are the work of Joseph Jackson Lister
