Description

Comprises photographs of various subjects taken by Leslie Hinge, between circa 1900 and 1942. Also one image taken by Josiah Martin. Most images were taken in New Zealand. They show:

- The streets of Wellington.

- The International exhibition held in Christchurch, 1905.

- The New Zealand visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, 1927.

- Tourism and scenic landscapes near Rotorua and Taupo.

- New Zealand towns, cities and countryside.

- Town, country, recreational and industrial activities

- Animal studies in various settings.

Description: An album containing photographs taken in Taupo, Rotorua, and Northland, many with Maori subjects. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1909. Many feature short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects including: - Scenes in the Taupo area, such as an urupa (burial ground) on terraces above the Tongariro River, a waka being used as a bridge near Tokaanu, and the `Serpentine Lake' in the Onekeneke valley. - The Aratiatia Rapids and Huka Falls on the upper Waikato River. - Various geysers and hot pools in the Wairakei Valley. - Maori women at Ohinemutu, cooking and washing clothes. Other women seated and wearing korowai (cloaks) are preparing flax for weaving and mat making. - Landscapes around the Waiotapu thermal area, including rivers, cliffs, and geothermal terraces, and caves near Lake Rotoiti with the caption "Old time Maori caves". - Views taken near Dargaville and Kaihu, including images of stacked timber, rafts of kauri logs on the Wairoa River, and the Wairoa Falls. - Scenic views around Whangarei Harbour, including of the Mushroom Rock, a natural causeway at Manaia, and Whangarei Falls. - Horse and bullock drawn wagons. - Small boats on waterways in the Hokianga Harbour area, including Waipapa River, being towed along by ponies swimming ahead through the water and attached by harnesses. - Scenic views around Whangaroa Harbour, including Pohutakawa trees and rock formation named Ohakiri (St Paul's Rock). - Views near Waitangi, including of the Waitangi Treaty House, mangroves, and the Waitangi Falls. Description: An album containing prints relating to the Rotorua District and Maori tourism in particular. The images were taken by Leslie Hinge, ca 1900-1903, except for one image taken by Josiah Martin in 1890. Many of the images have short captions written by Hinge giving subjects and locations. Images show various subjects, including: - The whare whakairo (carved meeting house) Tokanganui-a-noho with a sign 'Ko Rawaho' for the ancestor Rawharo at Te Kuiti. - Games of bowls being played on the green at the Government Gardens, Rotorua, showing the band rotunda in the background. - Whare at Te Ngae pa, with Maori families sitting and standing outside, including a woman weaving baskets. - Mud pools and steam vents at Tikitere (Hell's Gate) and Whakarewarewa. Also the Wairoa geyser hole at Whakarewarewa being "soaped", with tourists looking on, and subsequently spouting. - The bush-lined Kaituna River and the Okere Falls, including a flume for a hydroelectric plant servicing Rotorua. - A small motor launch pulled up on the shore of Lake Rotoiti, with tourists aboard and Maori captain. - Scenes at Whakarewarewa village, including children penny diving from bridge and bathing in hot pools, kettles and kete (baskets) for cooking, and views of houses. Also images of the whare whakairo Rauru, one with Sophia Hinerangi and a man who may be Mita Taupopoki outside; and another with the caption "Sold to Berlin - 1904". Also portraits of Sophia and Bella Papakura. - Scenes at Ohinemutu, including interior and exterior shots of the whare whakairo Tamatekapua, bust of Queen Victoria with St Faith's Church beyond, children bathing, and a woman named Merepaea Paea washing clothes. - A waka taua (war canoe) being paddled on Lake Rotorua and shots of canoes being manoeuvred over obstacles in races. - Broad views of Waimangu valley with steam rising from vents, Lake Rotomahana with Mt Tarawera beyond, and the inlet on Lake Tarawera below Te Wairoa. Mud from the 1886 Tarawera eruption is still visible. - Hangi (earth oven) being prepared. - Men performing a haka near Whakarewarewa (this image taken by Josiah Martin). Description: Three images taken by Leslie Hinge, taken probably ca 1900s and at some time between 1925 and Hinge's death in 1942. The prints were originally loose in two photo albums (see ref PA1-o-1911 and PA1-o-1912). The images show: - One of the `Twin' geysers at Wairakei Valley near Taupo. - Woman seated on the monument to commemorate the heroism of Arthur Ambury, with Mt Taranaki in the background. - Aerial view of the passenger ship Tamahine leaving Tory Channel for Cook Strait. Other - An image very similar to that found here of Mt Taranaki was published in `New Zealand Railways magazine' (1 June 1939, p 55), credited as a Railways publicity photograph.
