Description

Mr Hemi Te Poono of Te Teko with a Ringatu flag captured from Te Kooti by Government troops during the Battle of Te Porere. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 18th of May 1972.

The flag in the image was exhibited at the Dominion Museum, Wellington, as part of an exhibition about Te Kooti. It had been captured from Te Kooti during the Battle of Te Porere which took place on the 4th of October 1869, and which was the last set battle of the New Zealand land wars.
