Contains letters from Maori to McLean with regard to the New Zealand wars; in particular, there are letters about active engagements, Te Kooti's location and intentions, the attitude of the Kingitanga towards Te Kooti, and details of the negotiations with Tawhiao about `coming in'.
There are also letters about Maori land tenure, including letters about the proceedings of the Maori Land Court, offers to sell land, refusals to sell land and complaints about illegal squatting on Maori land.
Includes letter offering to sell part of Arapaoa (Arapawa) Island.
Includes letter from Tamihana Te Rauparaha to Tawhiao (& co) regarding a possible visit by Queen Victoria's son and the desire of Tamihana to visit Tawhiao with a contingent of Ngati Toa chiefs to discuss the matter.
