Focillon followed by a number in the individual records for these etchings refers to H. Focillon. 'G. B. Piranesi. Essai de catalogue raisonne de son oeuvre'. Paris, 1918.

According to Piranesi: early architectural fantasies, a catalogue raisonne (1986) by Andrew Robison the Carceri group within this group (numbers C-091-019 to -026 and -028 to 032) are likely to be 2nd edition, 3rd issue, mid 1760s to early 1770s. Other similar collections are at the Beinecke, Chicago, Soane and Princeton Art Museums. These show watermark number 36 throughout; the states of the various prints also match the description in Robison, p. 140.

The Carceri set is incomplete. Missing are Plates 3, 4,and 6. The set may have been incomplete when they were acquired by the previous owner, Percival Watts Rule

Processing information: On accession into the Library in 1953 the Carceri group was bound into the album E-194-f. Disbound by the Library, 1950s or early 1960s? The remainder were in a 'disbound' folio, whose covers have not survived.
