Volumes 1 and 2 of letter journals cover voyages from Australia to New Zealand, 1865-1868, with trips throughout New Zealand. Included are comments on the political situation, Maori, the landscape etc. Volume 3 comprises mainly letters between Hope and John B Thurston about Fijian annexation, 1865-1868, with acknowledgements of service. Volume 4 contains photographs of Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, portraits of Maori, of Captain Hope and Sir George F Bowen.
