1 Correspondence - Inward

Inward correspondence, written to Sargeson, covering the period from the 1930s until his death in 1982. A large number of people wrote to Sargeson - family, lifetime friends, established authors and would-be writers seeking his advice. As no apparent order was established by Frank Sargeson, the series has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent, then chronologically. Where a correspondent's letters are to be found in both collections, they have been kept separate. e.g. Margaret Fenton - MS Papers 432:41 and MS-Papers-4261:53. Usually MS-Papers-4261 contain more recent letters than MS-Papers-0432, but occasionally the date range overlaps. Although many people wrote to Sargeson from around the world, it is the number of New Zealand literary figures, as well as family, who correspond with him over many years that make this series particularly important. Where there were less than three letters from one correspondent, they were collected together in one folder under the first letter of the surname, eg one letter from Scott, or two letters from Smith will be found at the end of the `S's. Three additional locations for inward correspondence occur owing to a discernable order imposed by Sargeson. Correspondence relating to his involvement with the theatre in the 1960s is in Series Fifteen; correspondence relating to the financial affairs of Clarence Tucker is in Series Sixteen; and inward and outward correspondence with publishers is in Series Three. Letters from unidentified writers are at the end of the series as is correspondence between other writers. RESTRICTION Many letters from living correspondence require written permission from the writer before they can be consulted. Where the writer was known to be still living at the time of this project, the inventory and folder were stamped RESTRICTED. The usual copyright conditions apply.
