Description

Most of this collection relates to family, friends, pets, home, garden and trips to Britain. The record of the first trip of 1838/39 is interesting as it includes a shot of the Italian troops preparing for the invasion of Albania. War was declared when they were on the way home on the SS Rimutaka and there are photographs of passengers painting the ship in camouflage colours

99% of the photographs date from ca 1912 to ca 1977

Gavin George Wallace was born in 1894 in Yorkshire, England. His father was a keeper on an Earl's estate. At some stage in his early life he was adopted by an uncle, James Wilson Wallace and his wife, who lived at 6 Halswell Street, Thorndon, Wellington. James Wilson Wallace was a businessman who owned a factory in Wakefield Street which traded under the name of Wallace and Co. Gavin Wallace took it over in about 1933 and turned it into a mattress factory which made the first inner sprung mattresses in New Zealand. The factory also produced folding theatre seates. Gavin's first wife was Marjorie Peerless who died in 1936. In about 1937 he married his wife's younger sister, Joan Peerless, who features in in most of the photographs. She died in the 1975. In 1929 the telephone directory lists Gavin Wallace as living in Church Street, Karori. By the mid 1930s he was living at 6 Hauriki Street, Karori, and was there until the end of the Second World War. After the Second World War, Gavin and Joan retired to Tauranga where they had a house on a large section at Wallace Road, RD 2, Te Puna. Gavin Wallace was listed in the Telephone Directory at this address up to and including 1979. Most of the photographs of them and their House and garden date from this period in their lives. Gavin Wallace had no children from either of his marriages. He died in 1980.

Photograph album of family and friends

Date: [ca 1910-1913]

From: Bennett, Margaret (Mrs) :Family photographs and albums relating to Gavin G Wallace

Reference: PA1-o-773

Description: This album relates to Gavin G Wallace as a youth while he was still in England and later in New Zealand. It is likely that he came to live with his uncle and aunt in Wellington ca 1911 when he was about 18-20 years old. The Gavin Wallace in the English photographs is of secondary school age. He is seen with his family and others, and with his school contemporaries. That he was still in Britain in 1911 is suggested by his presence in a group photoraph of "C Squadron" in training at Bridlington in 1911 which may make 1912 the year of his settlement in New Zealand. This is the earliest date of the New Zealand photographs where he is seen with his aunt and uncle at their house in Halswell Street Thorndon, Wellington. The New Zealand photographs largly show him at leisure activities such as on the beach with friends, hooning around in a car, or in more formal situations on verandahs Quantity: 1 album(s).

Album of family photographs, New Zealand and overseas

Date: ca1913-ca1914

From: Bennett, Margaret (Mrs) :Family photographs and albums relating to Gavin G Wallace

Reference: PA1-o-768

Description: This album is a compilation recording a trip to Britain and Canada made by James Wilson Wallace and his wife prior to the First World War. James Wallace adopted his brother's son Gavin who by this time was living with him and his wife in Wellington. Gavin does not feature in this album, but it is highly likley that members of his Yorkshire family do. There is a record of a visit to Fountains Abbey, the seaside and unidentified towns. Military manoeuvers involving soldiers on horseback were observed, and there are two photographs of the experimental military aircraft, the B.E.2a, designed by De Haviland for the British Government in late 1912. There are photographs of Malta and (presumably) British battleships in the harbour. As well as Canada the Wallaces also seem to have visited Japan It is likely that the photographs in the album do not strictly follow the sequence of their trip Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
