The collection chiefly contains material related to Marsha Donaldson’s indexing and transcription work on shipboard diaries and first-hand accounts of voyages from 1839 to 1900. Also includes photographs and ephemera collected by Donaldson.

Description: Account of voyage from Gravesend to Port Chalmers on the vessel `Margaret Galbraith'. Hilliker was travelling in the single men's compartment and his brief daily entries record the ship's progress, vessels sighted, weather and events on board. He arrived at Port Chalmers on 9 Jan and took the steamer to Oamaru, his final destination, arriving on 20 Jan 1875. Description: The logbook describes the passengers' health and details of treatment and includes observations on the weather and the voyage. The medical comforts, list of stores and a chart detailing daily rates of sailing which are at the back of the original log have not been transcribed. Dr Thomas Hughes was the Surgeon Superintendent on board the New Zealand Company vessel `Clifford' during her voyage to Wellington and Nelson. The ship left Gravesend on 18 December 1841 and arrived at Nelson, its final destination, on 11 May 1842.
