Mitchelson, Edwin (Sir), 1846-1934

Timber merchant, politician. Member of Parliament for Marsden 1881-1887 and Eden, 1887-1896. Minister for public works 1887-1889. Appointed postmaster general in 1889. Prominent in Auckland local politics; Mayor of Auckland, 1903-1905. Knighted in 1920 and served on the Legislative Council from 1920 until his death. See DNZB (Vol 2, 1870-1900, p331)

Description: Volume 2 of a two volume record of New Zealand exhibits at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, 1915. Most of the photographs were taken by Leslie Hinge. Photographs include various `streets' inside the New Zealand pavilion, and closer views of some of the exhibition stands, which cover aspects of New Zealand agriculture (in the Palace of Agriculture, and the New Zealand Regrigerated Meat industry section). A stuffed moa, and stuffed heads of various deer; wool samples, canned foods, flax industry, kauri gum, cereals, lace, tallow, rope and binder twine, are all exhibited by a range of producers. The last section shows displays of marine photographs taken by Auckland photographers H. Winkelman and J H Kinnear, and examples of portraits taken by Auckland photographer H. Schmidt. Description: History of early New Zealand with photographs, newspaper and magazine cuttings. Mostly portraits of administrators, and governors. Includes information on the Treaty of Waitangi and the Wairau Affray, with a facsimile of the letter of condolence to the inhabitants of Nelson in New Munster from the Mayor, Alderman, Town Councillors and undersigned inhabitants of the Borough of Wellington. Copies of photographs of Parliament Buildings, including the buildings in Auckland used until 1865, the first building in Molesworth St., Wellington, and Parliament Buildings before the fire in 1907. Also one page devoted to New Zealand's first Labour Ministry with Michael Savage as Prime Minister. Album also includes fold-out panorama of St. John's College, Tamaki, Auckland. This is a copy of a lithograph by Mrs Caroline Harriet Abraham, which she possibly copied from a sketch by John Greenwood from his diary in 1851. (See Record at Ref. no.
