Friesian dairy stud animals and views of Molesworth Station

Date: [ca 1947-1960]

From: Campbell, Douglas Archibald, 1906-1969 :Photographs

Reference: PAColl-9902-8

Description: Photographs of fresian dairy stud animals in Canada. Photographs of Molesworth Station from an envelope entitled "not useful for movies." Molesworth Station is made up of the original Molesworth Station as well as Tarndale and St Helens to comprise the largest farm in New Zealand. Molesworth Station was taken over by the Government in 1938 when the owners walked off the property. The station was suffering extensive soil erosion as a result of overgrazing by sheep and rabbits, and repeated burning of tussock grasslands. Over the decades with careful management including revegitation and stocking with cattle only, the station lands have been restored to good health. Over the last half century it has been a show place for the scientific and practical management of soil conservation, and the restoration of high country farms working in conjuction with the environment. Quantity: 29 b&w original photographic print(s). Provenance: Donated by Ms Janice Campbell, Wellington, 2011
