Description: Five pages each containing a verse of text, accompanied by an illustration. The text tells a story of a boy who goes to pick an apple for his girl friend, and succeeds despite being frightened by a bear. He is rewarded with a kiss. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on pages of sketchbook, buckram bound, 85 x 85 mm. Provenance: The book was handmade by a German "interned alien" on Somes Island, Wellington, New Zealand, during the Second World War. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) had a permit to visit the island and help the internees and their dependants, and were able to bring some of the crafts they made, and sell them at a stall on their behalf (See note at AT 10/14, 24 September 2001 - copy with sketchbook). Processing information: Transferred from the Dorothy Neal White Collection in 2001.

Description: Murie describes Joosten's life since he came to New Zealand from Schleswig-Holstein about 1885, his subsequent career and the establishment of the company, Joosten and Murie, in 1907. Although naturalised in 1893, Joosten's life changed in 1918 when he was arrested as an alien and interned on Somes Island in 1918. Murie has supplied background information about Joosten and has used extracts from files held by National Archives to elaborate on the problems Joosten endured. Description: Most of the material in the series relates to Strewe's internment on Somes Island and at the Pahiatua Camp from 1942 to 1946. It comprises inward and outward correspondence between family, friends and officials, usually relating to his life within the prison, the conditions operating there and injustices, not only to him but also to other inmates. Also included, in the series of folders of his Somes Island scrapbook (MS-Papers-5921-050 to MS-Papers-5921-054), are parts of what appear to be writing (in German) about his internment.
