Clagsworthy, Caradoc, 1911-1986

Artist born in 1911 in Bolton, England. Sometime member Bolton Art Circle, Burnley Modern Art Group, and the Independents, exhibiting occasionally. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1961, lived in Wanganui and worked in a bakery, painting full-time after 1969. He exhibited with the Wanganui Art Society. Ceased painting in 1982, owing to deteriorating health. See biography in Art Ephemera 1990.

Description: Head and shoulders portrait of Peter McLeavey, who became director of Peter McLeavey Gallery, Wellington, in 1966. Biographical notes supplied at the Joe Bootham 1990 retrospective exhibition refer to a portrait of Peter McLeavey made on board ship to New Zealand in 1961 (See Art Ephemera 1990, Drawings and Prints, Alexander Turnbull Library). This was drawn in a pocket-sized sketchbook and is not the portrait acquired by the Library. The artist and subject met on board ship and became friends from 1962, when McLeavey spent time in Wanganui, where Bootham was living Title, including date, from label on backing board, supplied by the artist's son, Ivan Bootham.
