Crawshaw, Lionel Townsend, 1864-1949

English artist, born Doncaster, Yorkshire. He entered Cambridge in 1882, graduating with LLM in 1889. A painting of his showing the fishing fleet at Whitby is dated 1885. He painted in oils and, watercolours and produced etchings. He studied art in Dusseldorf, Karlsruhe and Paris, the latter in 1904 or 1905, returning to England about 1905 and taking a studio in Whitby, Yorkshire. He exhibited with the Royal Academy between 1905 and 1940, with addresses given as Doncaster (1907-1923), Whitby (1933-1934), Edinburgh (1935-1937) and Droitwich Spa (1940-1946). In 1923, while exhibiting with the Royal Scottish Water-colour Society, he was resident in Edinburgh.

Description: A view across sea towards the Endeavour, in full sail, and the town of Whitby (Yorkshire) in the background Additional note, formerly on the back, now below the work, in ink, in an unknown hand, possibly the artist's: 'The Earl of Pembroke leaving Whitby in 1768 for the Thames to join Captain Cook where she was renamed the Endeavour. It is as illustrated in Richard Wetherells book and the landscape is founded on an old print of the period in conjunction with the artists studies made out at sea'.
