Leigh, Samuel, 1785-1852

Pioneer Wesleyan missionary in Australia and New Zealand. Appointed to New Zealand 1821. First mission at Whangaroa. In 1820 he married Catherine Clowes (d 1831); and in 1842 he married Elizabeth Kaye, a widow. See DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869, p239, L6)

Description: Photograph of a drawing of Samuel Leigh, the first Wesleyan Methodist missionary to New Zealand. Artist and photographer unidentified. Samuel Leigh was appointed as a missionary to New Zealand in 1821. His first mission was at Whangaroa. In 1820 he had married Catherine Clowes, who died in 1831, and in 1842 he married Elizabeth Kaye. Although the date of the image is not known Samuel Leigh arrived in New Zealand in January 1822 and died in 1852. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Shows Wesleydale mission station established in 1823 by Samuel Leigh and William White.
