Description: Shows cows grazing in a fenced paddock, a homestead and farm buildings and a haystack in background Note on back: Timaru somewhere, I think. Possibly the work of Mary Grace Caroline Lysaght. The style is similar to hers and the handwriting may also be hers. Her sister, Annie Lysaght married Thomas Henry Wigley of Opuha Station, South Canterbury, in 1879. Mary Lysaght visited her sister in the early 1880s, and made other watercolours of the area. Description: Interview with Fred Early. Born in 1926, Ashburton. Talks about paternal great grandfather Samuel Early emigrating in 1860 and his grandfather Charles Early who bought Greendale farm in 1876. Discusses his father Leslie John (Les) Early, mother Rosetta Mildred (Rose) Early (nee Wells), and his siblings Athene, Eric, Lawrie, Phyllis, Annie and Ivan. Educated at Greendale primary school and Christchurch Boys High School. Recalls going to school in governess cart and railways bus, and using slate boards. Talks about living on Greendale farm, and Waterford farm as child. Discusses changes in Selwyn and Hororata rivers and why the rivers are more frequently dry now. Details arable farming as growing wheat, barley, lucerne crops, plus using Clydesdale horses, traction engine, wooden mill, chaff cutter, and cross engine chase tractor. Refers to his father being in cavalry in World War One, surviving Gallipoli, and buying Alford Forest farm in 1919 when rehabiliatated after WW1. Mentions not selling wool during the Depression. Talks about father and his brothers owning Te Pirita 3000 farm block, south of Hororata river. Mentions Americans funding secret building of Te Pirita airfield in 1942 by local contractors to cater for American bombers when Japanese invasion looked imminent. Says left school at 16. Refers to being part of food production effort to support England during World War Two, such as exporting lambs. Describes wheat harvest using Massey Harris header and sewing sacks. Description: Shows Leslie Hills Station in the Hurunui district, being the sheep and cattle station of George Rutherford. The single storey verandahed homestead with circular carriage drive, is placed on the gentle slope of a small hill, with neatly fenced fields and outbuildings to the left and right. At the left is a group of six conical haystacks. Several horses feed from a covered feed trough at the left. In the centre a horseman meets with a carriage drawn by two horses, one black and one white. In the far right foreground a group of longhorned cattle is grazing, and beyond, a figure is training two horses. A dark cloud at top left, brings a fleeting shower, but most of the farm basks in sunshine. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - N Chevalier 1866 Chevalier was employed by the Otago and Canterbury City Councils to make sketches of the regions, and travelled extensively throughout New Zealand over a period of eight months. Buildings include: wooden cottage with two doors and three windows along front; smaller cottage to the left, with two windows and one door, and another building partly obscured behind these. In right foreground is a low-walled garden, and a gibbet with carcass hanging, beside small hut. In right background is a large shed. Appears to be a picture of an early stage of development at the station, which was first settled by Alexander Lean in 1857, and bought by Hugh Percy Murray Aynsley in the mid-1860s. Description: Shows single-storey homestead with verandah in left foreground, with lake and mountains in background. In right foreground, a man with arm raised directs his dogs to round up stock (possibly cattle rather than sheep, but indistinct). There is some fencing across the field between dwelling and stock. Stitched to leaf tipped into sketchbook. E-501-f-059 on verso. Henry Taylor was drowned in the Teremakau River in 1867. This picture may therefore predate 1867.
