Schmidt, John Diedrich, 1839-1925
Schmidt, Johann Diederich, 1839-1925
German-born businessman and artist. Born in Bremen. Arrived in Melbourne, Australia, in 1858 where he, and his partners Shaw and Harnet started the 'Melbourne Age' newspaper.
He arrived in New Zealand in 1860, and with William Shaw and Harnet, founding several newspapers including the 'Southland Times' and 'Shortland Times' and the 'West Coast Times'. He was the lithographer for a group of West Coast views published in Hokitika in 1869. As Shaw, Schmidt and Co, founded a printers and engravers business in Auckland, but it was destroyed by fire. Shaw left for America, but Schmidt set up an engraver and lithographer in Vulcan Lane, Auckland. His business was later absorbed into the Brett Printing Company, and Schmidt remained at the company for 30 years.
Married Elizabeth Shields in 1868 in Hokitia. He was the father of the painter Armin Schmidt and of the lithographer William Shaw Diedrich Schmidt. Obituary Auckland Star, 2 June 1925, Page 3

Description:
The illustrated cover of a sheet music title 'The gold diggers' song' for a song with piano accompaniment.
The illustration depicts three men holding gold nuggets, standing by a stream, with a fourth miner standing in the entrance to a tunnel to the left. Digging tools and a wheelbarrow, billy and hat in front of the men and their tents and another mine entrance in the background.
The song credits printed on the sheet music cover: "Words by Mrs St George; music by Y. T. Mata, Auckland" [pseudonym for the composer, derived from ‘Waitemata'].
The illustration credits are: "Del. I Wai Theton" [pseudonym for the illustrator, derived from "I weigh the ton". "Del" refers to delineavit or drawn by], and "J D Schmidt Litho" (John Diedrich Schmidt, a lithographer).
Mrs St George was the pseudonym of Frances Shayle George, née Frances Southwell, 1828-1890.
The sheet music is likely to have been published in 1869 when John Diedrich Schmidt arrived in Auckland.
