Description: Comprises diaries kept by North relating to his life at Te Whaiti, as well as earlier and later periods. Also includes one diary kept by Jessie North; 7 volumes of business records of his father, Francis North, a draper of Paeroa (one made over into a scrapbook); two books of medical studies notes; a travel diary for 1978; prescription records; record of car mileage and maintenance; minutes of the Adult Education group of Te Whaiti (1950-1953), minutes of an unidentified marae committee, and film club notes (1959-1961) Dr North's diaries describe his daily life and activities, concentrating on practicalities rather than medical matters. He recorded family activities, noted the time he woke up, going to and taking part in church affairs, including taking services, and similar topics. His visiting records note the name of the patient but not his/her condition. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Museum of New Zealand and Auckland Museum have copies of `Carved houses of the Urewera' by North North practised as a doctor based at Te Whaiti (1947-1971) and the bulk of the collection reflects this. Description: The collection is of four items: (1) a diary for 5 January-13 September 1916 kept by Martin until four days before his death. It describes life at the front and hospital experiences, mostly in France; (2) a copy of `A surgeon in khaki' published 1915 in which he describes his experiences in the Royal Army Medical Corps in France and Flanders (1914-1915) and which is inscribed to his wife; (3) a folder of enclosures from the diary and the book which include clippings about war, R F Scott, the duties of an officer and a letter to the edtior of the `Scotsman' about the Royal Army Medical Corps quoting Martin's book, calling cards, a pressed flower `margery in flower', a note on Haig's Order of the Day, an autographs card, a Masonic address, a leaflet in Niuean `Koe tau kupu ke he tau', a postcard of Isbergues and a page of notes (4) a French government propaganda poster urging the population to be careful about information that might be useful for the enemy. Other Titles - A surgeon in khaki Martin served in the Royal Army Medical Corps 1914-1915 and wrote `A surgeon in khaki' following those experiences. Description: John outlines family background which includes names of Drakley and Shaw who settled in Kaiapoi near Christchurch. Father became Head of Dunedin Teachers' College which was in Union Street. Describes his years at Otago Medical School and mentions Professor Billy Benem FRS as one of his most notable teachers. A year after graduating as a doctor John joined the New Zealand Army (1940) and was posted to Trentham before going overseas with the 4th Field Ambulance to Greece. Refers to convalescent depot in Ishmalere on the Suez Canal near the Bitter Islands and Maadi Camp. Later he was attached to the 2nd New Zealand Divisional Cavalry Unit in the desert. Talks about the desert sores which were so difficult to get rid of. Talks of the confusion of the war and his inability to make some sense of it at the time. After the war (1946), with some encouragement from Colonel Kendrick Christy, John settled in Wanganui and had a medical practice. Describes the profound changes during the past 50 years and details his outstanding medical memories and the increased role of nurses. In 1986 John retired and became a member of the Wanganui City Council. Describes his association with the Kaumatua Kaunihera with reference to Horo Hipango. John had a keen interest in conservation and considers himself lucky to have had a few articles and poems published in the magazine `New Zealand Outdoors' (copies of these as well as articles written for the Wanganui Chronicle are included with abstract).
