Crocombe, Ron, 1929-2009

Professor of Pacific Studies at the University of the South Pacific. His reputation was such that he was described as the "father of Pacific Studies". Born in Auckland and raised in the King Country. Completed a degree from Auckland University. Went to Rarotonga as Clerk of Works for the Government's Public Works Department in 1950. In 1957 he became the Resident Agent head of local government on Atiu. Director of New Guinea Research Unit 1962-1969. In 1970 joined the University of the South Pacific. Founder and first director of the Institute of Pacific Studies at the University. Retired to Rarotonga.
