Wellington photographer and businessman. Born in England. Travelled first to Australia, then to Wellington in 1877. In 1880, was secretary of Gear Meat Company. In 1893 he set up the Commercial Agency Company. Was appointed landscape photographer to the Governor, Lord Onslow. Was also involved in gold and antimony mining in Marlborough district, and in conservation. Dec 1892-Feb 1893 was temporary ranger on Little Barrier Island for the Lands and Survey Department. Father of Reginald Clarke Wright, Elizabeth Minnie Clarke Wright, and Amy Elizabeth Clarke (daughter from 1st marriage in Australia). In the album there is one photograph (p 33), of the Pink Terraces which was possibly taken by the Burton brothers. They include two photographs (on p 1, 36) of his wife (probably his second wife Mary Jane (nee Woolman), as it is likely they were taken between 1886 and 1890, dated from the style of her dress, and he didn't marry his third wife, Elizabeth Hughes Hallett, until 1907) Many were taken around the Wellington coast, including views of the Wellington Heads; two views of Maori whare at Karaka Bay (circa 1879)(p 13) and one with a Maori chief in front of a whare (p 15); and three photographs of a bay near Karaka Bay showing torpedo sheds (p 20), a naval camp (p 30), and the explosion of a torpedo in the sea (p 31). He has issued a circular to "Epicene Women," who are interested in the elections, asking them not to call on him, but to stay at home and cook their husbands' dinners, and other things. Evidently a woman hater. Oh well, it is delightful to have such frank gentlemen living in Wellington. I am interested in the elections but I shall not call for "Henry Wright's" vote.
