Watson, Jean Catherine, 1933-2014

New Zealand writer. In 1965, she published a novel "Stand in the rain", based on her relationship with Barry Crump. In 1984 she helped to establish the Karunai Illam, a home for children of Nilakottai in Tamil Nadu See Dominion Post Obituaries (Saturday, January 17, 2015, C3).

Includes her literary drafts, notebooks, research files, legal and financial papers, ephemera, AV cassettes and discs, electronic files, photographs, and correspondence. Also includes material relating to the Karunai Illam Trust and orphanage, and to Barry Crump. New Zealand novelist and short story writer Jean Catherine Watson published her first book 'Stand in the Rain' in 1965 which draws on her marriage to writer Barry Crump. This novel was reissued twice; in 1985, and in 1995. She completed a religious studies degree, and many of her literary works are concerned with spiritual ideas, particularly with Vedanta philosophy. In 1984, she established the orphanage, Karunai Illam home, in India. Two titles: The 'Three Sea Stories' (1994) and 'Karunai Illam: the Story of an Orphanage' came from this endeavour.
