[Oliver, Richard Aldworth] 1811-1889 :Upper Hutt River in the early 1850s.

Date: 1848 - 1851

By: Clarke, Cuthbert Charles, 1818-1863; Oliver, Richard Aldworth, 1811-1889

Reference: B-030-001

Description: Shows Maori launching a canoe; a horse and cart are on the road to the right, at the base of a cliff Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030/002. Both slips removed in the course of conservation and no longer present. There is a faint pencil drawing of a bush scene on the verso. The backing of the work has been partially removed and the drawing is hard to see. This work was attributed by the Library to Cuthbert Clarke until 2008. However Clarke is not known to have visited the Wellington region and the style appears closer to that of R. A. Oliver, who was based in Wellington and visited the Hutt Valley on more than one occasion. One watercolour of the Hutt by Oliver is dated March 1848, another September 30th, with no year. Compare the articulation of the figure dragging the canoe at the right, with a figure in the same position, dragging a canoe at Wahapu, Bay of Islands, in Oliver's watercolour at C-001-011 Other Titles - Clarke, Cuthbert Charles, 1819-1863. 1848-1851 Inscriptions: Recto - 'Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030-002' according to catalogue card. Neither hand-written slip has been retained. The wording of the title suggests a later attribution, not the artist's own title. For location of this view compare with Charles Barraud's "[River valley] 1856" at B-084-005; and with G Swainson's "Road round the second gorge", lithograph in British Library - see file print of this at E-143-067. Several of Swainson's lithographs are after originals by other artists. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 241 x 327 mm

Description: Sketch map of the province of Wellington, with topographical features including rivers, and depicting three major pieces of information as at December 1853 (tinted blue): the quantity of land purchased from the Maori (as at July 1953 1,469,700 and tinted pink and as at December 1853 3,168,600), the estimated quantity of available land (5,172,084), and the estimated quantity of waste land (2,161,317) as per Commissioner Donald Mclean's statement. The total of these lands is given as 10,502,001. A note on the map states that 'the contents of the purchases tinted blue are only approximated - not having been surveyed'. The land blocks identified include Ahiaruhe, Puketoi, Hapuka, Ahuriri, Mohaka, Whanganui and Rangitikei. Please note that the blue and pink tints on the map are indistinguishable due to the copy being in black and white. Description: The two bastions and linking fence of Fort Richmond, Hutt Valley, ca 1945. The Hutt River runs across the foreground with the first arched bridge crossing it. Probably copied from a watercolour by S. C. Brees. Compare watercolour held in the Alexander Turnbull Library at B-031-035, which is from the same angle, although taken from a greater distance. Possibly intended for reproduction in James Cowan's book The New Zealand wars. The image used in Vol. 1 p. 93 is from a different angle and is captioned as being by George Swainson. The Library holds a drawing of the Fort by George Swainson (A-023-015) but it shows the second bridge over the river. Inscriptions: Herbert R Cole Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: A single-storied house with fence to one side, at the base of the Hutt hills, viewed from across water, possible the edge of the Hutt Estuary, with raupo, flax and birds. Initially attributed to William Swainson with suggested title [House in the Hutt Valley]. However comparison with the style of George Swainson's crayon drawing of Herongate (A-188-013) suggests that William's son George is the more likely artist and that the house is located close to Herongate in Petone, not far from Moreings Creek and the Hutt Estuary. Other Titles - House in the Hutt Valley [former title, along with attribution to William Swainson] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Crayon on paper, 110 x 200 mm
