Baillie, William Douglas Hall, 1827-1922

Born New Brunswick, Canada. Educated Royal Military College at Woolwich, served in India; returned to England; promoted captain and appointed commander at Chichester. Resigned from the army; emigrated to New Zealand, arriving on the 'Oriental' 1857. Settled in Marlborough. Runholder; colonel commanding the Marlborough forces; with the expedition to Parihaka; local politician; member of the Legislative Council 1861-1922; Marlborough education board for 20 years. An independent source gives the artist as Robert H Hawcridge (1867-1920). The signature appears faintly below the image of Whakarewarewa.
