British statesman, writer, and amateur scientist. Born 1823 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, and succeeded his father as Duke of Argyll in 1847. Served as Lord Privy Seal (1853-1855, 1859-1866, 1880-1881), Postmaster General (1855-1858), and Secretary of State for India (1868-1874). As a scientist he was chiefly interested in ornithology and was a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Married three times, to Lady Elizabeth Leveson-Gower (1844-1878), Amelia Maria Claughton (1881-1894), and Ina McNeill (1895-1900). Died in 1900 and was succeeded as Duke by his son John Campbell.
