Description: Raised redoubt in front of a cloud-ringed Mount Taranaki. Two long buildings and a flag flying are shown on top of the redoubt. A dwelling at the base of the redoubt has smoke coming from the chimney. Four figures can be seen, including a soldier with rifle in the foreground. A similar image (by S Percy Smith) was published on page 17 of Cowan's 'The adventures of Kimble Bent'. Possibly by Messenger. Description: Ink and pencil drawing published with the caption 'The Normanby redoubt (Taranaki), 1879' and source credit 'From a sketch by Mr. James Robson', on page 482 of James Cowan, 'The New Zealand Wars' (1956 edition). Depicts a redoubt built by settlers at Normanby (Matariki), near Ketemarae, Taranaki. Annotated "A frontier post", "For 'Enzed Junior' to go in Cowan's story 'Frontiersmen'", and "The Settlers' Redoubt at Ketemarae, Taranaki, 1879." This image was published in Cowan's 'The New Zealand Wars, Vol II'. This redoubt was built by the settlers at Normanby (Matariki), near Ketemarae, in Taranaki, during the critical times on the Waimate Plains. It was afterwards garrisoned by an Armed Constabulary detachment, and a watch-tower was built as shown below. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: A small wooden stockade with gun-holes, a gate, two watch-towers and the roofs of two other buildings, and a flagpole. The stockade is on top of a hill. One armed soldier is patrolling the perimeter, another watches through a telescope from inside the stockade, while two men in the foreground are also on guard and a third is delving into the contents of a barrel. Description: Mount Taranaki to the right in the middle distance. In the foreground is the earth and palisade fortification at Pukerangiora Pa, Te Arei, on the Waitara River. Two European soldiers are in the trenches, overlooking the wooded valley below. To the left, beyond the palisade are the the Maori dwellings of the pa. The Union Jack is flying on a flagpole in the centre. The National Library of Australia holds a watercolour from a similar angle, entitled 'The interior (or rather exterior works) of the rebel pah at Te Arei' (photograph held) showing the trenches and Maori firing at the European soldiers climbing the steep hill to the right. Description: Shows the township seen from Marsland Hill with the harbour and Sugar Loaf Rocks in the background and St Mary's Church with the beginnings of the new additions, started in 1860, in the foreground. Also various regiments (including 40th?) and encampments near church, military hospitals, Marsland Hotel, and various other churches. cf. Taranaki Museum's watercolour and pencil drawings of the same scene, and Hocken's col. lithographs, all signed by Edwin Harris, Harris may have copied Gold, and this painting has been attributed to Gold in the past. See Otago Daily Times, 9 Jan 1982, p. 30 for further confirmation of attribution The lithographic copy of this image in St Mary's Church, New Plymouth includes a key to various features. The title is New Plymouth from Marsland Hill. To the left of St Mary's, the two-storied building is Marsland Hotel and military Hospital. To the right, across the road, past the troops, the high-gabled single-storey building with a small porch by its door is the Maori Chapel. The two-storied building opposite the chapel is the Military Hospital. Further off to the right, the tallest building is the Wesleyan Chapel. Description: The fortification on Marsland Hill at New Plymouth with a large hospital tent in front and many Maori and Pakeha in front of it. In the foreground, groups of Maori and Pakeha, including a man performing a challenge, with an axe. The occasion appears to be festive, with many flags strung up and families present, possibly after the cessation of hostilities at New Plymouth. Based on a watercolour in Edward Arthur Williams' sketchbook, called Taranaki (E-348-131/13l). There is also a watercolour of the same subject called New Plymouth 18 June 1864 by E. A.
