Christchurch lawyer, economist, philosopher and socialist. Born in Germany and came to New Zealand in Jun 1937 as a Jewish refugee, after briefly going to England; his parents joined him in 1939; married Ann Eichelbaum in 1946. He attended Victoria University during the war and was appointed a lecturer in economics at Canterbury University in 1946 where he remained until his retirement in 1979. He gained his law degree after he retired and practises in Christchurch.He was one of the founders of the Council for Civil Liberties and in 2000 he was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit.
