Well-known identity in the Thames goldfield region of the 1870s, and lived at Manaia. Gottfried Lindauer painted as many as 30 versions of her carrying a child on her back. The direct basis for these portraits is a carte-de-viste studio portrait by the Foy Brothers of Thames. Also known as Ana Reupene Whetuki and Heeni Phillips. [Source: www.lindaueronline.co.nz]

Description: Copy negative of an oil painting by Gottfried Lindauer, showing Ana Rupene. The negative was made, probably between 1881 and 1900, by Samuel Carnell of Napier. Dated from Carnell's use of the dry plate process later in his career. The image carries Lindauer's signature and the date 1881 in the bottom left corner. A print made from this negative in the early 20th century, probably by Carnell himself, is housed in the General Assembly Library Collection (PAColl-0354).
