NZOHA Four Generation Oral History Project

Description: Interviews a member from each of four generations of two families from the Wanganui region - the Stoneman family and the Mete Kingi family. Focuses on parent-child relationships, marriages, attitudes to alcohol and drugs and other social behaviour in the Stoneman family. Members of the Stoneman family interviewed are Cristal Stoneman, Sharon Stoneman, Ian Stoneman and Olive Olsen. Members of the Mete Kingi family talk about Maori culture, traditional life, loss of language and the relearning of it in the current generation, land disputes, attitudes to sex and Maori-Pakeha relations. Those interviewed are Aneka Erueti, Karen Erueti, Rangipo Mete Kingi and Wikitoria Mete Kingi. Description: Structured life history interviews with longterm residents of the Wairarapa town of Martinborough. The object of the project was to gather first hand accounts of living in a small rural town in NZ in the first part of the twentieth century. Description: Interviews with twelve female and ten male centenarians with the eldest interviewee aged 106. Focuses on their recollections of the nineteenth centry and early twentieth century. Sixteen of the interviewees were born in New Zealand and the rest were born in Scotland, England and Russia. Interviewees had been involved in a wide range of occupations including domestic work, nursing, teaching, factory work, business, engineering, clothing industry, logging and farming. Description: The National Library of New Zealand commissioned the NZOHA in 1988 to record life history interviews with 12 former staff members or users of the Country Library Service. The interviews are with Field Librarians who drove book vans, with librarians who ran the `A' and `B' libraries which were supplied by the Country Library Service and with librarians who worked at the Country Library Service. The interviews describe the setting up, development and running of the Country Library Service and the `A' and `B' libraries. Some of the interviews also discuss library training, the development of the National Library of New Zealand and other libraries and library associations. The work of the Field Librarians is described in detail. The impact of Country Library Service on smaller and rural communities is discussed. Reference is made to many people involved in the library profession during the period 1930-1970.
