Built in 1875 and designed by Architect William Barnett Armson in Venetian Gothic style, it replaced a wooden building built in 1863. Located on corner of Hereford and Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch and near the detached Librarian's House. Library and House operated until the library service shifted to new premises on Gloucester Street 1981-1982. Additions made in 1901 and 1924 to the former public library complex were badly damaged in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake and consequently the building was demolished. Originally registered as a Category II historic place (#4910).
