Description: Photographs of the Commonwealth Conference on Broadcasting held in London, England, February-March 1945. Chiefly taken by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). Delegates from South Africa, Australia, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom are identified on the rear of 14 of the prints. The New Zealanders pictured include Smith himself, journalist BBC TV news editor Tahu Hole, Professor James Shelley (Director of the New Zealand National Broadcasting Service), and Wynona 'Noni' Wright (BBC Pacific Service radio presenter). Most photographs in the collection are group portraits or of conference panels at Broadcasting House, but there are also two images from a visit to the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford on Avon and two of a luncheon for the Australian and New Zealand delegation. Two further images taken by an unidentified photographer show a group of men on Manchester Canal and another group is identified only as 'S Kelton'. Quantity: 16 b&w original photographic print(s). The collection was then passed onto Judith McDougall. In 1996 McDougall gifted the collection to the Theatre Programme at Victoria University of Wellington.
