Dixon, Marmaduke, 1828-1895

Canterbury farmer and runholder. Born Lincolnshire. Apprenticed as a seaman; gained master's ticket. Came to NZ in late 1840s; settled on leasehold run between Waimakariri and Eyre rivers, 1852. Married Eliza Agnes Wood ion England 1859. Returned 1860, and built a homestead `Eyrewell'. Introduced to Canterbury the three-furrow plough, the straw elevator and the slip-gate for drafting sheep. Possibly first Canterbury farmer to export frozen lamb carcasses to England. Six children - Marmaduke John (Duke), Richard, Rosa and Catherine. In 1892 freeholded his estate totalling 16,000 hectares; on his death divided between his children. Duke, Eyrewell block; Richard, Holton block; Rosa, Claxby block; Catherine's block was sold to Duke. [Ninety-nine years - Some memoirs' by Marmaduke Spencer-Bower, ca 1999]
