Born Carlisle, England; died a "merchant" in Karori, Wellington; married Isabella Graham in Dunedin, ca 1908, at 50 years; two daughters (by previous marriage?; aged 47 and 42 in 1931) [death cert. 1931/650]. Travelled and took photographs in Japan in 1900. Employed by the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts in 1901, to produce pictorial images to promote tourism.

Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks.
