Schmidt, Hermann John, 1872-1959

Auckland portrait and scenic photographer. Born Auckland. Trained at Auckland studio of Hemus & Hanna, which business he acquired in 1905. Was vice-regal photographer ca 1910. A selection of his portrait photographs was exhibited in the New Zealand pavilion at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco, 1915. See "Auckland through a Victorian Lens" by William Main. A collection of around 26,000 negatives of his photographs are held by Auckland City Libraries.

Panama-Pacific International Exposition album 2

Description: Volume 2 of a two volume record of New Zealand exhibits at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, 1915. Most of the photographs were taken by Leslie Hinge. Photographs include various `streets' inside the New Zealand pavilion, and closer views of some of the exhibition stands, which cover aspects of New Zealand agriculture (in the Palace of Agriculture, and the New Zealand Regrigerated Meat industry section). A stuffed moa, and stuffed heads of various deer; wool samples, canned foods, flax industry, kauri gum, cereals, lace, tallow, rope and binder twine, are all exhibited by a range of producers. The last section shows displays of marine photographs taken by Auckland photographers H. Winkelman and J H Kinnear, and examples of portraits taken by Auckland photographer H. Schmidt. Description: Photographic studio portraits of individual women, one man and woman, and of a baby, taken circa 1910s to circa 1920s and 1959 by a range of photographers in New Zealand and Australia. Photographers include Hurst and Palmer, Nellie Ferner, [Albert S?] Winzenberg, Howard Harris, Judith Fletcher, Ellerbeck, Vaile Studio, Hermann Schmidt, [Broma Studios, Nelson?], Zenith Studio, and W H Barlett. Includes a copy of a 1959 portrait of Muriel Emma Bell in her academic gown (with inscription on rear giving her death date of 1974) and two portraits of Gladys Armstrong (in both of which she is wearing glasses [pince-nez?]). An inscription on the rear of the print of the man and woman says "Mackie" (though it is uncertain what this relates to), and the rear of one print [no 14], which is pasted to an enclosure, reads 'Yours with love, Nance'. All other subjects are unidentified. The women wear dresses, academic gowns, and furs and the baby is photographed on a wicker couch. All, but the one of Muriel Bell, are mounted, and show a range of print presentation styles.
