Tesla Studios

Photographic studio established in Wanganui by Mark Lampe ca 1910. Had an address in Hastings in 1900. Purchased F J Denton's studio ca 1927. Sold out to G S Brent ca 1955. In 1984 Leigh Mitchell-Anyon bought the studio from Mr Brent. In 1995 Leigh split the collection retaining the earlier glass plates and large format film and sold the rest of the collection to Stuart Crawford. The collection and MAXILAB was purchased off Stewart Crawford in May 2003 by Ian Jones MAXILAB photo film & digital.

Description: Album relating to the history of the Ratana Church, most likely compiled by James Henderson, 1918-1974. Contains scenes from the Ratana movement, some with accompanying notes. Buildings shown in photographs include the Ratana home and two halls at Ratana Pa (Piki te Kaha and Whare Marama) in 1922, a later image of the halls combined with three others as Te Manuao circa 1937, the interior of the Whare Maori museum (with faith healing articles), Te Temepara O Te Haahi Ratana (exterior and interior images), the Ratana Church at Te Hapua, an aerial image of Ratana Pa in 1846, a montage of images from Ratana circa 1939, and stacks of mail requesting healing waiting for response. Events featured are the opening of Te Omeka Pa, Matamata, in 1937, the opening of Te Manuao in 1938, and the funeral of T W Ratana in 1939. Also contains an image of a 1921 faith healing camp in Wanganui. Contains portraits of Tahupotiki Wiremu Ratana, photographed at a number of times from age 44 onwards, and Ratana family members Maata [Te Reo Hura], Matiu, Te Omeka, Te Urumanao (Te Whaea), Piki Huia, Rawinia (Winnie) and Te Arepa. Description: Collection comprises registers owned by Tesla Studios. 20 registers were created by Frank Denton Studios, and the remaining four by Tesla Studios. These registers are an index to 2624 black & white original negatives that are in the Photographic Archive at Turnbull Library, reference (PA-Group-00410). The registers provide the surname and negative number. Source of title - Supplied by library Arrangement: The collection contains 24 registers, which are housed in 9 clamshell boxes. Tesla studio was founded in Wanganui by Mark Lampe around 1910, and named after a village in Germany. Circa 1927, Lampe purchased F J Denton's photography studio, which included the studio of Alfred Martin (a continuation of that founded in 1856 by W J Harding), which Denton had acquired in 1899. Denton continued operating Martin's studio until it was sold to Lampe. In 1955, Lampe sold the studio to G.S. Brent, and the studio was later purchased by Leigh Mitchel-Anyon in 1984. In 1995, Mitchel-Anyon split the collection retaining the earlier glass plates and large format film and sold the rest of the collection to Stewart Crawford.
