A chief of the Ngati Tama and Ngati Toa. Wahapiro was the son of Te Taku, younger brother of Te Puoho-o-te-rangi and Kauhoe of Ngati Hinetuhi (Waitara). He was a half brother to Wi Katene Te Puoho, aka Wiremu Nga Manu, the principal chief for Ngati Tama in the Nelson area.
