Originally part of the New Plymouth Mechanics Institute (comprising a museum and library), which was founded in 1848. Known as the Taranaki Museum from 1919. In June 2003 it was joined with the New Plymouth District Library and the New Plymouth District Information Centre, and renamed Puke Ariki.
