Interview with Ray Richards
Date: 17 Jul 2003
From: An oral history of New Zealand publishing
By: Richards, James Harray, 1921-2013
Reference: OHInt-0843-02
Description: Interview with Ray (James Harray) Richards, born Dannevirke in 1921. Talks about his entry into publishing in 1936 as an apprentice in the new Wellington office of A H & A W Reed. Describes the company at this time when it had an emphasis on religious books, and the unplanned nature of their publishing. Refers to the company's origins in Dunedin in 1907, operating more as a hobby than as a business in the early years. Describes changes in the New Zealand publishing industry by the 1950s to make up for the lack of imported books in the post War years, and relations with booksellers and local printers. Talks about his changing role as design and production manager, editor and then publisher for Reeds. Comments on the increase in general New Zealand titles published by Reeds such as titles on high country life, including "A River Rules My Life" by Mona Anderson and "A Good Keen Man" by Barry Crump. Mentions that this filled an emotional gap for New Zealanders, giving them national pride. Recalls Reeds also published serious books on natural history, agriculture, geography, history, biography, Maori, hobbies and sport, but not fiction. Refers to publishing New Zealand pictorial books in colour beginning in the early 1960s, having them printed in Japan until the exchange rate became unfavourable. Discusses the establishment of the Sydney office in 1964, to focus on filling the same sort of publishing gap in Australia. Mentions facsimile publications of George Frederick Angus books. Refers to Reeds actively commissioning titles, including Peter McIntyre's highly successful "The Painted Years". Discusses the readers, workbooks and textbooks published for schools and the development of Reed Educational. Comments on Reed's dedication to publishing New Zealand titles, whereas other publishers were mainly publishers representatives for their overseas (UK) owners with small local lists. Refers to the period until the eary 1970s and the advent of television as a golden age of publishing. Mentions leaving the company in 1976, and declining the role of company chairman. Comments that the highlights of his career had been the people - staff and authors.
