Description: Sketch shows a view of a curve in the river with two canoes, one near to the viewer with five occupants, and one further away. Behind the further canoe, reflected in the water, are four structures of vertical wooden poles (possibly a hakari / food storage tower). These are either on the far bank or standing in the water close to the bank. There are hills in the distance, and vegetation in the left foreground and right background. Description: View from the Munro property towards the two-storied Greenwood homestead across the water. Two Maori canoes are drawn up on the beach to the left. Horses and cattle graze in the foreground close to trees and one standing and two seated figures are indicated on a bank left of centre, looking across the bay Compare a very similar photograph by Daniel Manders Beere, in the Photographic Archive - Matakana, 1863, negative 1/2-096074. Description: Fishing boats in the sea to the left, possibly in the Bay of Naples, with people on shore, buildings including castles on hill-tops, high hills to the right This oil is one of three bequeathed to ATL by Mona Clifton Gordon in 1977. ATL was notified that the oils were at Waikato Museum of Art & History and it was decided that the works would remain on long-term loan to Waikato. In 1992 ATL was reminded the works were still at Waikato, and they were recalled. They arrived in April 1993. Other Titles - Untitled sea scene (Waikato Museum of Art & History) Albin Martin first visited Italy in 1839 when he travelled to Rome to join Samuel Palmer and Hannah Linnell, who were honeymooning there.
