Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Whakaue. His father was Rawiri Rota Tahiwi (of Ngati Raukawa, and of the hapu Ngati Maiotaki). His mother was Keita Koa, also known as Kapu Meaha and Keita Pera (Te Arawa, with connections to Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Pukaki, Ngati Tahu and Ngati Whaoa). Named after his uncle, who was a signatory to the Treaty of Waitangi. Married to Jane (Jean) Esther Armstrong of Ngai Tahu and Ngati Raukawa. Their children were Kingi Te Ahoaho Gilling and Kahurangi Hera, and they also raised their niece Mereana Tahiwi. Some years after his first wife passed away, he married Elsie Winifred Loader (formerly Duley). Founder, chairman and choirmaster for Ngāti Poneke Young Māori Club; composer and musician; tenor in St Paul's Choir; teacher; licensed interpreter and translator; rugby official, referee and team manager. Also used the name Kingi Rawiri Tahiwi.
