Description: Letter from Mark Twain, writing from the Star Hotel, Auckland on `Monday', ca 1895, to Dr R H Bakewell. Also, pasted on the reverse of the paper holding the envelope, a letter from Dr Bakewell writing to his father from the hospital in Scutari during the Crimean War, informing him of his illness (17 Jul 1855), a letter from H M Wagner, Brighton Vicarage, to Dr Bakewell, concerning the British mother's journal (3 Jan 1861), and a letter from The Right Revd (later, Cardinal) Henry Edward Manning, Bayswater, London (16 Aug 1860). Physical Description: Holograph, mss Provenance: Bought as an auction item, under the name of Mark Twain autograph from Christies, 2008. The letter and envelope have been pasted to a page from what was a guard book. On the back of the page are pasted three letters by or to Dr Robert Hall Bakewell. Considering that the Mark Twain letter is also addressed to Dr Bakewell, we can assume that the letter was taken from a collection of material kept by Dr Bakewell or by his descendants.
